How to Put Pet Ashes in an Urn: A Careful Step-by-Step Guide

By Spencer

To put pet ashes in an urn, first check how the cremation provider returned them. If they are in a sealed bag that fits through the urn's opening and sits inside without being forced, you can usually place the bag in the urn without opening it. Check the urn's capacity and instructions before you move anything. If the bag does not fit, the closure will not sit properly, or you would rather not handle the remains, ask the provider for help.

1. Check the package you received

Before opening the temporary outer container, ask the provider whether the ashes are in a sealed inner bag and whether that bag should remain closed. Keep any identification label and paperwork with the remains according to the provider's instructions. If you received a rigid inner container and want to place that whole container in the urn, measure it too.

If a bag or container is damaged, leaking, or difficult to identify, stop and contact the provider before moving it.

2. Check capacity and opening separately

Ask the provider for an estimate of the returned volume, then compare it with the urn's published capacity. The urn's outside dimensions tell you how much shelf space it needs; they do not tell you whether the bag or inner container will pass through the opening. Check that separately, leaving room to place the package without forcing or sharply folding it.

Do not use a pet's breed, weight, or a product photograph as a guarantee of fit. If you are still choosing an urn, use our pet urn capacity guide to compare the information you have.

3. Learn how your urn opens while it is empty

Read the instructions for your particular urn. Set it on a stable surface and try opening and closing it before bringing the ashes to the table. Clear a space for the package, and put any removable piece on a soft, clean cloth where it cannot fall. Do not force a part that does not move as expected.

For Wayhome's Obsidian Black ceramic cat urn, the current product page lists a 700 ml capacity, outside dimensions of 15 × 14 × 17 cm, and an opening instruction of a 90° rotation followed by a lift. These specifications do not establish the opening width or guarantee that a particular sealed bag will fit. Confirm the package dimensions with your provider before choosing the urn.

4. Place the sealed bag inside if it fits

Move the sealed bag into the urn carefully, without squeezing it through the opening. Keep its identification with the remains as your provider advises. Then close the urn according to its instructions and check that the closure sits as intended. Avoid adding glue, tape, or sealant unless the maker specifically instructs you to use it.

If the bag is too large, the closure does not sit correctly, or placement would require opening the bag, pause. Ask the cremation provider whether they can repackage or place the remains for you. Our guide to keeping pet ashes in the original bag explains that choice in more detail.

When to ask the cremation provider for help

  • You are unsure what is inside the temporary container or how it is labeled.
  • The sealed bag or inner container is larger than the urn opening.
  • The package would need to be forced, folded sharply, or opened to fit.
  • The urn does not open or close as its instructions describe.
  • You would simply prefer someone else to place the remains.

You can take your time. The provider can tell you how the remains were packaged and whether they can help with the transfer.

Common questions

Do I need to remove pet ashes from their original bag?

Usually no, if the provider confirms the bag can remain closed and it fits the urn comfortably. Packaging practices vary, so check with the provider who handled your pet's cremation.

What if the urn has enough capacity but the bag will not fit through the opening?

Do not force it. Capacity describes interior volume, while opening size determines what can pass through. Ask the provider about a suitable inner package or help placing the remains, or choose an urn with a suitable opening.

Do I need to seal the urn with glue?

Follow the instructions for the particular urn. Do not add an adhesive unless its maker calls for one.
